Process Engineer

Position Description:

The Process Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing manufacturing processes to enhance productivity and efficiency. They lead Lean manufacturing projects, apply Six Sigma methodologies, and conduct risk assessments to ensure process quality and safety. The role involves collaboration with various departments to refine processes, provide training on continuous improvement, and troubleshoot manufacturing equipment issues. Additionally, the Process Engineer develops process design plans and monitors data using statistical tools to identify and address process deviations.

Process Design and Optimization:

  • Utilize manufacturing engineering methodologies to design, implement, and improve new and existing assembly processes.
  • Lead Lean manufacturing projects to improve productivity, reduce waste, and increase efficiency.
  • Analyze current production processes and identify areas for improvement using Lean tools such as Plan-Do-Check-Act, Value Stream Mapping (VSM), SMED, 5S, and Kaizen.
  • Perform and understand common time study methods including Standard Time Study, Work Sampling, Cycle Time analysis, Motion & Time (MTM), Value Add/NVA analysis, & Takt Time Analysis.
  • Develop and implement process improvement plans, including Standard Work & Kanban systems.
  • Create process design plans including flowcharts, process maps, equipment specifications, floorplan layouts, and work instructions using tools such as Visio, AutoCAD, Word, and Excel, for new and existing product lines.
  • Develop and implement optimization strategies to enhance labor productivity and increase production throughput.
  • Utilize Six Sigma methodologies to reduce variability and improve quality.
  • Monitor data using Statistical Process Control (SPC) tools (e.g. Excel, Minitab, SPSS) and identify process deviations and implement corrective actions.
  • Conduct risk assessments for new processes or changes to existing processes to identify potential issues before implementation.
  • Ensure process adherence to safety standards, regulatory requirements, and customer specifications.
  • Identify and mitigate safety hazards in manufacturing operations.

Collaboration and Teamwork:

  • Collaborate frequently with Customer Focus Teams including Product Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, and Operations to develop and refine manufacturing processes for new and existing product lines.
  • Advise relevant departments of current and potential impacts to manufacturing processes and capabilities.
  • Generate reports to communicate process metrics and improvements to management and quality departments.
  • Facilitate continuous improvement workshops (Kaizen events) to engage employees in problem-solving and process optimization.
  • Train and mentor team members or production staff on new processes and Lean methodologies to foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Provide input during asset acquisition and allocation processes.

Manufacturing Equipment Expertise:

  • Develop knowledge base of new and existing manufacturing equipment capabilities, limitations, and utilization.
  • Integrate new equipment assets into production processes.
  • Review equipment programming and setup operations for process optimization.   
  • Assist in the development of preventative maintenance procedures for new and existing equipment assets.
  • Assist production teams in troubleshooting and resolving issues related to manufacturing equipment, process deviations, and defects in real-time.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Technical Services Manager

Authority:

  • Stop production processes due to safety, quality violations, or unauthorized process deviation.
  • Initiate Document Control Notification (DCN) process.
  • Initiate Temporary Deviation (TD) process.
  • Initiate Machine Down Notification process.

Experience/Technical/Other Skills Requirements:

  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in Manufacturing, Industrial, or Process Engineering. Minimum 3 years for candidates with prior electronics manufacturing experience.
  • Education: BS- Manufacturing Engineering or Industrial Engineering or equivalent prior work experience.
  • Training: Experience in Statistical Process Control, Lean and Six Sigma certification is desired.
  • Skills – Strong analytical skillset. Team leadership skills. Strong Attention to detail. Strong computer literacy. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
