Centroid. - In the electronics assembly industry, centroid means the "geometric center" of a component. It includes the component body and all leads and is used to identify the type of parts placement data supplied with Gerber files. These Gerber files include all X/Y locations of the centroid for each component relative to the zero datum point of the assembly. Most modern placement machines require centroid data. They cannot place parts with "Pin 1" data since electronic components have different shapes and sizes.
